Opening the door to

Where do you think Sophie and Sadie are going? That’s a pretty big door! Not as big as the one in Florida at the NASA Kennedy Space Center. That door is so big (456 feet or 139 meters) that it takes 45 minutes to open or close them! Cupcakes

What could be more fun than decorating cupcakes?! – well, maybe eating them! Did you know that it wasn’t until 150 years after cupcakes were invented that someone thought to put frosting on them. I wonder what took them so long? Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

Super Moon

Sunset, moon rising – both are so amazing. This week was the supermoon, with the moon as close as it will be to the earth until 2034! I’m glad Sophie and Sadie didn’t miss it! Did you know that scientists believe that after the earth was created a huge object flying around the universe hit the earth and bounced out into space and became our moon. Wow. Raking leaves

Such a beautiful and fun time of year! All of the beautiful colors and the crunch sounds when you walk through the leaves. And, of course, jumping in leaf piles! Did you know that the color that we see in the fall is actually the true color of the leaf? The summer sun mixes with something called chlorophyll in the leaves that makes the leaf green – but when the sun isn’t as strong and we move towards Fall, the […]

Apple picking

One of the fun things to do where we live in the Fall is to go apple picking – and apple tasting! There are so many different kinds of apples in the world that if you tasted a different kind every day it would take you 20 years to taste them all! Puddles

It doesn’t look like Sophie’s umbrella is going to help her stay dry with Sadie jumping in the puddle! Puddles have a funny definition – basically they are any water that is shallow enough to walk through and not deep enough to float a boat or raft. I think a better definition is ‘fun to splash in!’ Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

Acorns harvest!

It’s that time of year with the squirrels running around gathering up acorns for the winter. Squirrels, woodpeckers, and deer eat acorns – and people can too! But not straight off the oak tree…unless you want a tummy ache. People have to either cook the acorns or soak them in water for a long time to make them safe to eat. Hay Ride

For some people hay season may mean allergies – for farmers it means getting food stored for the winter for their animals – for the rest of us it means all the lovely things that come with fall…including hay rides! Sometimes tractors pull the wagon and sometimes it’s horses. Hay is the name for dried grass. Farmers pile it into hay stacks, roll it into round bales, or squash it into rectangular shaped blocks. Black bears!

The other day while I was walking in the woods, I ended up talking to a little boy who excitedly told me he had seen a bear on his walk and I excitedly told him I had seen one too and we were both so excited that we had someone to tell who believed us that we walked away happily. Since there are only 50 black bears in the entire state of Ohio, I think we both probably were dreaming […]

Pine Cones

Seeds for growing new trees grow in the pine cone. They start off soft and green and sticky and then grow into hard brown cones to protect the seeds. After a few years, they open up and the wind blows the seeds out! Pine cones come in all different sizes – from as small as your little finger to as long as your arm and from weighing almost nothing to weighing 10 pounds! The ones Sophie and Sadie found look […]
