Bird Feeder

Some people like to feed the birds in the winter so they can enjoy seeing them up close. Other people think that it’s better for the birds to find their own food! What kind of birds and how many come to eat all depends on what kind of seeds you put in the feeder. There are birds that like to eat from bird feeders and birds that like to eat what they find on the ground. One of the tricky things […]

Snowman

We’ve got a lot of snow outside and Sophie and Sadie decided it was time to make a snowman! Not everyone likes snow – in fact there are some cities that have festivals every year where they blow up a snowman – hoping it will make the warm weather of spring come faster! Snow shoveling

Looks like Sophie is working hard – it also looks like Sadie is about to be naughty! Did you know that snow is not white!? It doesn’t have any color – but as the rays of the sun’s light go through the clear snow it makes it look white. But if the snow is deep enough, the light going through the snow can look blue! Sledding!

Sleds have been around for a long time! The Inuit people (we used to call them Eskimos but they prefer Inuit) made sleds out of whale bones – but mostly sleds are made out of wood or metal or plastic. Of course, you can sled down a snowy hill on top of just about anything flat, like a big piece of cardboard or a cookie tray! The sled Sophie and Sadie are on looks like it’s plastic to me! Click […]

Icicles!

Most of the time we see icicles on houses – but they are so beautiful when they grow on trees! And they are fun to touch and hold, but you have to be careful because they can be very heavy! Icicles grow when it’s freezing cold and sunny. The sunlight melts the ice and snow – and it starts to drip. But then the freezing cold air makes it turn into ice again. Every drip that turns to ice adds […]

Braille

Did you ever wonder what all of the dots are next to the numbers in the elevator? They are there so people who are blind or have a hard time seeing with their eyes can ‘read’ with their fingers! Each letter or number is made up of a different combination of 6 dots. I wonder where Sophie and Sadie are going!? Happy New Year 2017

It’s almost January and that means it’s time for fireworks! Different countries and different cultures have different New Years that they celebrate at different times of the year. Here in the United States, just about everyone calls January 1 New Years Day and gets new calendars – and there are lots of fireworks! It was actually Julius Caesar in 45 B.C.E. that decided the calendar officially started on January 1 – although the Romans had been celebrating that day since […]

Snowflakes!

Some of our friends have lots of snowflakes piled outside – and other friends are in shorts and t-shirts at the beach! Either way, it’s fun to draw snowflakes. Every snowflake is different, so you can’t go wrong! Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

Elevator

Elevators have been around for a long time – but they weren’t always powered by electricity! In the ancient Roman Colosseum, there were 24 elevators that were powered by slaves pulling ropes. There is even evidence of elevators in ancient Egypt and even earlier. Looks like Sophie and Sadie are going up – but to where?
