Sunflowers

Aren’t sunflowers so happy – it’s like they should have a big smile in the middle of the flower! So many fun things to know about sunflowers – they give us and the birds yummy seeds to eat and also oil to use. And after you take the seeds out you can use the head of the sunflower as a scrubby brush! They grow straight and tall – the tallest sunflower was the size of a 3 story house! – […]

Sophie and the Gymnastics Vault

I had a feeling that gymnastics was going to be Sophie’s favorite Olympic sport – but I didn’t guess that she was going to try the vault first! But after watching Simone Biles on the vault during the 2016 Olympics, I can understand why she’d want to! I might suggest she starts with some somersaults on the floor! The vault is also called a horse – maybe because there is a sport in the horse-riding world where athletes do gymnastics […]

Sadie and the shot put

Well, it looks like Sadie has figured out an Olympic sport that works well for having one frond (cactus arm) – the shot put! She was super excited that Michelle Carter was the first woman in the US to win a gold medal in shot put in the Olympics. I haven’t told her how heavy the actual shot puts are…the women’s shot (the ball is called the shot) weighs 8.8 pounds (4kg) and men’s shot weighs 16 pounds (7kg) – […]

Monarch butterfly

There are so many interesting things to learn about Monarch butterflies! Did you know they can fly up to 2,000 miles to spend the winter in Mexico? They can even fly all the way across the Atlantic ocean! But when it comes time to lay their eggs, they fly to North America and look for Milkweed plants. The caterpillars (before they turn into butterflies) can eat a whole leaf off the Milkweed plant in less than 4 minutes! Click on […]

Tractor ride

Looks like Sophie and Sadie are having some fun riding around on the tractor! The word tractor comes from the Latin word ‘to pull!’ I guess that makes sense. Usually tractors are carrying bigger things than a little girl cactus! Can you imagine a tractor that is so big it has 12 tires – and the tires are as big as a grown up person!? Crazy! Lemonade Stand

I know that it’s summer when I see lemonade stands popping up! I don’t know about where you live, but where we live it’s really hot and lemonade is the perfect drink to cool down. There is evidence that people were drinking lemonade in Egypt a long time ago (1500 years ago!) – which I can understand…it’s really hot there! I’m wondering if Sadie is going to drink all of the lemonade! Click on the image below, or click here, to open […]

Sprinkler fun

Running through the sprinkler has to be one of the funnest things about summer! This type of sprinkler was invented because people wanted green grass – and so it needed to be watered. Now there are much more water saving ways to keep your grass green…but lucky for Sophie and Sadie they still have one that makes water in the shape of a fan! Seedlings

All seeds are ready to come to life – they just need water! They don’t even need dirt to start off with. Sometimes we plant seeds directly into the ground – and sometimes we start them off in a little bit of dirt until they have sprouted into a seedling and are strong enough to grow on their own in the garden. Once the seed has started to grow – with a little stem and maybe some baby leaves – we […]

Adding dirt to the garden

Making a garden can be hard work! Today Sophie is adding dirt to the raised bed that she and Sadie built. We usually think of dirt as….dirty. And it can be dirty! But it is also full of healthy, living organisms and worms and bugs – and it even cleans water by taking out any bad things! Building raised bed

Sophie and Sadie are building something called a raised bed for the plants. Putting seeds or plants in the ground and covering them with the dirt is a little bit like putting them in bed! Sadie is using a hammer to push the nail that Sophie is holding into the wood to keep the pieces together. Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!
