Yves Klein Blue

Some painters use brushes to paint – some use other things like turkey basters or wooden sticks. Yves Klein used people! And he loved the color blue so much that he designed a shade of blue that he named after himself! He would put paint on his models and then pull them around the canvas or have them lie down on the canvas – like a living paint brush! Sophie seems to be having fun sliding around on the paint! […]

Target with four Sophie faces

It looks like Sadie is recognizing Sophie’s beautiful smile in this art! The original piece, called Target with Four Faces by Jasper Johns is a mix of sculpture and painting and collage and more! The faces are plaster, the frame and the boxes the faces are in is wood, and the target is painted on top of a collage of newspapers…and the paint is a mix of paint and beeswax. So interesting! Story quilt

Sophie and Sadie are looking at a story quilt that is a bit like Faith Ringgold’s story quilt (and book) called Tar Beach. Faith Ringgold is an artist who paints pictures onto the fabric – and sometimes she also writes the story on the quilt to make sure everyone understands what she wants to say! What do you think this quilt is trying to say? Quilts have a long history of telling stories. Sometimes the story is in the pattern that the fabric […]

Sculpture – prehistoric Lowenmensch

The oldest sculpture that has been found looks like a lion’s head on a person’s body. For some reason, Sophie and Sadie think that is pretty funny. It was found in Germany where they call it Lowenmensch – which basically means lion human and is 40,000 years old! It was carved out of the tusk of a woolly mammoth. I don’t know about you, but I think it was smart of the museum to put it in a glass cabinet! […]

Sculpture – Egypt Ushabti

Looks like Max made it to the museum as well! Who doesn’t like learning about Ancient Egypt?! These sculptures by the Ancient Egyptians are called Ushabti. They were buried (sometimes hundreds of them – and sometimes they were small and sometimes they were big) with the dead and expected to servants to them in whatever came next. The hieroglyphics on their legs was their contract saying they were willing to work! Click on the image below, or click here, to open the […]

Museum – sculpture, The Dancer

I bet Sophie is pretty surprised to find a statue in the museum looks just like her! Sculptures can be made out of all different kinds of materials – wood, metal, ceramic, ice, fabric. They can be any size from tiny to huge. This statue looks like a famous statue by Edgar Degas called Little Dancer. He originally made the statue out of wax – and later 28 copies were made out of bronze. Click on the image below, or […]

Building a hut

I actually think that they are building a fort – but they told me it’s a hut, so that’s what we’re calling it. It is pretty amazing how we can make places to stay safe and warm and dry out of just about anything. Max just moved into the neighborhood – they all seem to be cooperating and are certainly doing a good job building the hut! Ducks in a row

Something a little different this week. I was wondering what ducks would wear if they could get dressed up. What do you think? Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

American Gothic – our way!

American Gothic is a famous painting by Grant Wood. It’s probably one of the most recognized and parodied paintings right after the Mona Lisa.  In honor of the American 4th of July this year, Sophie and Sadie decided to get dressed up and pretend to be the painting.  I think they do pretty well!  A fun fact about this painting is that it is actually depicting a father and daughter.  I’ve always assumed it was a husband and wife.  You […]
