Apple picking

It’s apple picking time where we live! Sadie must be picking apples from a dwarf (shorter) apple tree since she’s pretty short. What do you think she’s going to do with them? One other fun fact about apples – the Chinese word for apple is pronounced ‘ping’ which also means peace. cornfield

Walking through a cornfield is so cool!  The corn this time of year is really tall and it makes a beautiful music as the wind goes through it. It also has a lovely smell. Did you know that there is corn grown on every continent in the world except for Antarctica?! Honey Bee

Did you know that honey bees are responsible for pollinating about 80% of all of the fruits, vegetables, and seeds in the United States? There is a lot of concern lately because the honey bee population is getting smaller. One of the problems is that there are more and more places that honey bees can’t live because there aren’t enough flowers and yummy things for them to eat. Glad these bees are finding some pollen (that is what is sticking […]

bathtub

I have learned a lot about bathtubs this week! People have been taking baths for thousands of years – except for a period of about 300 years in Europe when no one took a bath or shower or washed up at all it seems.  In Japan it was traditional for the whole family to take a bath together and many cities throughout the world had public bath houses where people stopped in to take baths. kayaking

I just learned to kayak this week and now Sophie’s giving it a try. It’s hard work! But it’s nice and quiet and calm – and that’s just why the native people near the arctic circle invented kayaks about 4,000 years ago. Being so quiet made hunting easier! Now people mostly kayak for fun. Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

Desert Island

I always thought a desert island was what all of the pictures of tropical paradise islands with sand and palm trees. Turns out I was wrong! Desert islands are deserted islands, meaning no one lives on them. They sure do look restful. shark!

Wow – good think Sophie and Sadie are safe in their boat! Not all sharks attack people, but I don’t think I want to take the chance. Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

tire swing!

Wow – this is really a fun swing! Don’t you wish you were on it with Sophie and Sadie? There are so many old tires that are starting to be recycled in very cool ways – as tire swings, of course!, and also under playgrounds to make the ground softer and more bouncy and also mixed into the asphalt on highways to make them last longer. swinging

It’s summer where we live – and that means playing in the park and swinging on the swing set! I wonder if Sadie is going to get to swing next?! It is so cool that there are drawings of women and kids swinging on swing sets on ancient Greek vases. Cows

Did you know that cows can walk up stairs, but they can’t walk down stairs? It’s the way their knees are designed. So cool! Also, cows are like people. They like being together, and sometimes they like the other cows in their herd and sometimes they don’t!
