Apple picking

One of the fun things to do where we live in the Fall is to go apple picking – and apple tasting! There are so many different kinds of apples in the world that if you tasted a different kind every day it would take you 20 years to taste them all! Puddles

It doesn’t look like Sophie’s umbrella is going to help her stay dry with Sadie jumping in the puddle! Puddles have a funny definition – basically they are any water that is shallow enough to walk through and not deep enough to float a boat or raft. I think a better definition is ‘fun to splash in!’ Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

Acorns harvest!

It’s that time of year with the squirrels running around gathering up acorns for the winter. Squirrels, woodpeckers, and deer eat acorns – and people can too! But not straight off the oak tree…unless you want a tummy ache. People have to either cook the acorns or soak them in water for a long time to make them safe to eat. Hay Ride

For some people hay season may mean allergies – for farmers it means getting food stored for the winter for their animals – for the rest of us it means all the lovely things that come with fall…including hay rides! Sometimes tractors pull the wagon and sometimes it’s horses. Hay is the name for dried grass. Farmers pile it into hay stacks, roll it into round bales, or squash it into rectangular shaped blocks. Black bears!

The other day while I was walking in the woods, I ended up talking to a little boy who excitedly told me he had seen a bear on his walk and I excitedly told him I had seen one too and we were both so excited that we had someone to tell who believed us that we walked away happily. Since there are only 50 black bears in the entire state of Ohio, I think we both probably were dreaming […]

Pine Cones

Seeds for growing new trees grow in the pine cone. They start off soft and green and sticky and then grow into hard brown cones to protect the seeds. After a few years, they open up and the wind blows the seeds out! Pine cones come in all different sizes – from as small as your little finger to as long as your arm and from weighing almost nothing to weighing 10 pounds! The ones Sophie and Sadie found look […]

Hiking through the pine trees

Looks like Sophie and Sadie found a beautiful place to go hiking. Pine trees are so tall and strong – and have a lovely smell. Instead of big leaves that fall off in the winter, the leaves of pine trees are shaped like needles and they stay on all year. The shape is perfect for wintertime, since the snow slides right off! Carrots

Carrots are a root vegetable – so the colorful crunchy part that we usually eat is hidden under ground. Usually they are orange, but they can also be red, yellow, white, or purple! I’ve had all of the colors and I can tell you they don’t taste exactly the same. People have been eating carrots for at least 4,000 years, but they’ve only been eating orange carrots for about 400 years. Orange carrots were developed by Dutch carrot growers for […]

Pie Contest

Sophie and Sadie are off to the county fair – and I’m not surprised that they found the pie contest, but I am a little concerned that they are going to get in trouble for eating the pies! What’s your favorite flavor of pie? Did you know that in the 1600’s eating pies was against the law in England because people enjoyed it too much!? Sunflowers

Aren’t sunflowers so happy – it’s like they should have a big smile in the middle of the flower! So many fun things to know about sunflowers – they give us and the birds yummy seeds to eat and also oil to use. And after you take the seeds out you can use the head of the sunflower as a scrubby brush! They grow straight and tall – the tallest sunflower was the size of a 3 story house! – […]
