Snow shoveling

Looks like Sophie is working hard – it also looks like Sadie is about to be naughty! Did you know that snow is not white!? It doesn’t have any color – but as the rays of the sun’s light go through the clear snow it makes it look white. But if the snow is deep enough, the light going through the snow can look blue! Icicles!

Most of the time we see icicles on houses – but they are so beautiful when they grow on trees! And they are fun to touch and hold, but you have to be careful because they can be very heavy! Icicles grow when it’s freezing cold and sunny. The sunlight melts the ice and snow – and it starts to drip. But then the freezing cold air makes it turn into ice again. Every drip that turns to ice adds […]

Raking leaves

Such a beautiful and fun time of year! All of the beautiful colors and the crunch sounds when you walk through the leaves. And, of course, jumping in leaf piles! Did you know that the color that we see in the fall is actually the true color of the leaf? The summer sun mixes with something called chlorophyll in the leaves that makes the leaf green – but when the sun isn’t as strong and we move towards Fall, the […]

Pine Cones

Seeds for growing new trees grow in the pine cone. They start off soft and green and sticky and then grow into hard brown cones to protect the seeds. After a few years, they open up and the wind blows the seeds out! Pine cones come in all different sizes – from as small as your little finger to as long as your arm and from weighing almost nothing to weighing 10 pounds! The ones Sophie and Sadie found look […]

Sophie and the Gymnastics Vault

I had a feeling that gymnastics was going to be Sophie’s favorite Olympic sport – but I didn’t guess that she was going to try the vault first! But after watching Simone Biles on the vault during the 2016 Olympics, I can understand why she’d want to! I might suggest she starts with some somersaults on the floor! The vault is also called a horse – maybe because there is a sport in the horse-riding world where athletes do gymnastics […]

Lemonade Stand

I know that it’s summer when I see lemonade stands popping up! I don’t know about where you live, but where we live it’s really hot and lemonade is the perfect drink to cool down. There is evidence that people were drinking lemonade in Egypt a long time ago (1500 years ago!) – which I can understand…it’s really hot there! I’m wondering if Sadie is going to drink all of the lemonade! Click on the image below, or click here, to open […]

Building raised bed

Sophie and Sadie are building something called a raised bed for the plants. Putting seeds or plants in the ground and covering them with the dirt is a little bit like putting them in bed! Sadie is using a hammer to push the nail that Sophie is holding into the wood to keep the pieces together. More Birthday fun

Time for more birthday fun – I think Sophie and Sadie must have made another friend…because it’s not their birthday! Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

Building a hut

I actually think that they are building a fort – but they told me it’s a hut, so that’s what we’re calling it. It is pretty amazing how we can make places to stay safe and warm and dry out of just about anything. Max just moved into the neighborhood – they all seem to be cooperating and are certainly doing a good job building the hut! bathtub

I have learned a lot about bathtubs this week! People have been taking baths for thousands of years – except for a period of about 300 years in Europe when no one took a bath or shower or washed up at all it seems.  In Japan it was traditional for the whole family to take a bath together and many cities throughout the world had public bath houses where people stopped in to take baths.
