Grand Canyon National Park Rafting

Grand Canyon National Park Rafting

Well, last week Sophie and Sadie were at the top of Grand Canyon National Park looking down – and this week they are at the bottom looking up! And that’s really far up – it’s over one mile (6,093 feet!) from the bottom to the top of the canyon. Glad they are in a gentle part of the river. The rapids can get pretty crazy in some part of the Colorado River! Click on the image below, or click here, to open the […]

Grand Canyon National Park

Well, it certainly is grand if grand means humongous! It’s long and it’s wide and it’s deep. Although it is not the biggest canyon in the world. But it might be the most famous. The amazing thing is that a simple river, the Colorado River, running over the area for 5-6 million years carved away all of that stone. Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park

Off to Mesa Verde (green table in Spanish) National Park in Colorado! Native Americans built these pueblos (cliff dwellings) into the cliffs – partly to work with the sun. The angle of the sun in the winter warmed the stone buildings that many families lived in together and in the summer when the sun was higher in the sky, the cliffs protected the buildings from getting too hot! The Native Americans used ladders to climb up into the buildings (there are […]

Saguaro National Park

Looks like Sadie has found some family in Saguara National Park in Arizona! The Sonoran Desert is the only place in the world that the Saguara Cactus grows – and they can grow pretty tall (the tallest on record was 78 feet tall)! Cacti (the plural of cactus) come in all shapes and sizes. Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park in Florida

I can’t blame Sadie for being kind of scared – alligators, crocodiles, snakes! And lots more birds and reptiles and mammals and insects – in fact, while most US National Parks are about preserving beautiful and amazing places, the Everglades in Florida are about preserving an area for all of these beautiful and amazing plants, animals, and insects! Hot Springs National Park

Some water springs come from melting snow coming down from the mountains. Those are usually cold. And then there are springs where the water comes up from deep inside the earth – and those are usually hot! In Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas the water comes out of the earth at 143 degrees Fahrenheit or 62 degrees Celsius. That means Sophie had better be really careful about sticking her toes in! Native American tribes had been going to the […]

Mammoth Cave

Good thing Sophie and Sadie have those flashlights on their helmets – caves can get very dark! Mammoth Cave is a National Park in Kentucky – and it is the longest cave in the world! It have more than 400 miles of cave passages. That would take a long time to get through! The funny thing is, no one has found any Woolly Mammoths in the cave – the name comes from how big some of the openings are! Click […]

Acadia National Park

Sophie and Sadie are off to Maine! To Acadia National Park – the first national park east of the Mississippi River. Since it is on the Atlantic Ocean, there’s water and land things to do – and a lighthouse! And whales! I’m not sure whether Sadie is waving to Sophie or trying to warn her about the whales…good thing they are friendly! Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Sophie and Sadie are off on their adventure of visiting the US National Parks this summer. Do you see them? They are starting off in our own backyard! If you like history combined with biking and hiking, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is for you. The bike path (and a fun passenger train!) go along a part of the Ohio & Erie Canal – and there are also rivers, caves, hills, fall colors, some old homesteads, and more! Click on […]

Leaving Home

There is a time to do research and there is a time to head out and take action! Sophie and Sadie are off on their summer adventure visiting the US National Parks. So exciting! We love taking trips. And when you take a trip, you have to pack things to take along…like underwear, for example. And that’s where luggage comes in handy! It comes from the word to lug – which is what people did before someone thought to put […]
