Cornucopia

It’s Thanksgiving in the US next week and that means we are seeing a lot of cornucopias (also called Horn of Plenty) in gifts and decorations. But cornucopias were being used long before anyone had heard about Thanksgiving – the Ancient Greeks were the first we know of who made cornucopias to show off their harvest of food and flowers. Daffodils

Yay for Spring! Beautiful yellow flowers everywhere – dandelions and daffodils. Although daffodils also come in white and orange and even lime-green and pink! Daffodils bring happiness – and they also bring poison! Make sure you put them in a vase of their own or the sap in their stalk will kill the other flowers. Dandelions

It’s spring! Dandelions are such a fun happy sign of spring. Not so long ago, people used to want dandelions to grow in their yards! They are useful as food, medicine, and dye for coloring. The name comes from the French and means ‘teeth of the lion’ because the leaves are jagged like a lion’s teeth! In the fridge

The first home refrigerator was designed by a French monk in 1911! There were refrigerators before that, but not for in homes. Instead people had ice boxes that were kept cold by…ice! not electricity. Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

Bloated Belly!

Well, they didn’t eat the WHOLE thing, but pretty close! Those are some full bellies I see there. The word ‘belly’ comes from the Old English word for a stuffed bag! Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

Grocery cart

What do you think Sophie and Sadie are buying at the grocery store!? Did you know that it used to be that when you went to the grocery store you handed your list to a clerk who would put everything together for you. That was when there were 800 items in grocery stores instead of 40,000! In 1916, a Piggly Wiggly in Tennessee was the first grocery store that let people do the shopping themselves. Snowman

We’ve got a lot of snow outside and Sophie and Sadie decided it was time to make a snowman! Not everyone likes snow – in fact there are some cities that have festivals every year where they blow up a snowman – hoping it will make the warm weather of spring come faster!
