Cornucopia

It’s Thanksgiving in the US next week and that means we are seeing a lot of cornucopias (also called Horn of Plenty) in gifts and decorations. But cornucopias were being used long before anyone had heard about Thanksgiving – the Ancient Greeks were the first we know of who made cornucopias to show off their harvest of food and flowers. Pumpkin time!

Sophie and Sadie are wandering through a pumpkin patch – just in time for Halloween! There are lots of different kinds of pumpkins – some are better for eating and some are better for carving. They are native to North America, but now they are grown on every continent except for Antarctica! Raking leaves

Such a beautiful and fun time of year! All of the beautiful colors and the crunch sounds when you walk through the leaves. And, of course, jumping in leaf piles! Did you know that the color that we see in the fall is actually the true color of the leaf? The summer sun mixes with something called chlorophyll in the leaves that makes the leaf green – but when the sun isn’t as strong and we move towards Fall, the […]

Apple picking

One of the fun things to do where we live in the Fall is to go apple picking – and apple tasting! There are so many different kinds of apples in the world that if you tasted a different kind every day it would take you 20 years to taste them all! Acorns harvest!

It’s that time of year with the squirrels running around gathering up acorns for the winter. Squirrels, woodpeckers, and deer eat acorns – and people can too! But not straight off the oak tree…unless you want a tummy ache. People have to either cook the acorns or soak them in water for a long time to make them safe to eat. Hay Ride

For some people hay season may mean allergies – for farmers it means getting food stored for the winter for their animals – for the rest of us it means all the lovely things that come with fall…including hay rides! Sometimes tractors pull the wagon and sometimes it’s horses. Hay is the name for dried grass. Farmers pile it into hay stacks, roll it into round bales, or squash it into rectangular shaped blocks. Pumpkin picking

Looks like Max found the pumpkin he wants. He’s pretty strong! Although the biggest pumpkin is about the size of a full sized Polar bear, so in comparison it’s pretty small. Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

Pumpkin

It’s definitely pumpkin season – pumpkins pumpkins everywhere. Pumpkins come in different colors – orange, of course, and also red, green, white, and yellow.  They can grow pretty big – this one is just the perfect size for Sadie to rest against. Falling Leaves

It’s fall where I live and the leaves are turning beautiful colors (not that green isn’t beautiful!) and starting to fall off the trees.  How fun!  That means yummy smells, making crunchy sounds walking through the leaves, jumping in leaf piles – or collecting leaves like it looks like Sophie is doing or catching them like Sadie is trying to do!  What is your favorite thing about Fall?
