Voyageurs National Park

Our National Parks tour is almost over! This week Sophie and Sadie are at Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. The way to get to this park is by water – on a kayak or canoe or boat! Moose are in the same family as deer – but much much bigger. Their shoulders are a high as an adults head – and that’s not even counting their antlers (which are also called paddles). The word ‘moose’ means twig eater in […]

Acorns harvest!

It’s that time of year with the squirrels running around gathering up acorns for the winter. Squirrels, woodpeckers, and deer eat acorns – and people can too! But not straight off the oak tree…unless you want a tummy ache. People have to either cook the acorns or soak them in water for a long time to make them safe to eat. Black bears!

The other day while I was walking in the woods, I ended up talking to a little boy who excitedly told me he had seen a bear on his walk and I excitedly told him I had seen one too and we were both so excited that we had someone to tell who believed us that we walked away happily. Since there are only 50 black bears in the entire state of Ohio, I think we both probably were dreaming […]

Sculpture – prehistoric Lowenmensch

The oldest sculpture that has been found looks like a lion’s head on a person’s body. For some reason, Sophie and Sadie think that is pretty funny. It was found in Germany where they call it Lowenmensch – which basically means lion human and is 40,000 years old! It was carved out of the tusk of a woolly mammoth. I don’t know about you, but I think it was smart of the museum to put it in a glass cabinet! […]

Turkey

It’s almost Thanksgiving – which is all about turkeys. Even if you don’t eat them! One of the ways to tell a boy turkey from a girl turkey is by looking at their poops! Boy poops look like spiral coils and girl poops look like the letter J! Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

Honey Bee

Did you know that honey bees are responsible for pollinating about 80% of all of the fruits, vegetables, and seeds in the United States? There is a lot of concern lately because the honey bee population is getting smaller. One of the problems is that there are more and more places that honey bees can’t live because there aren’t enough flowers and yummy things for them to eat. Glad these bees are finding some pollen (that is what is sticking […]

Cows

Did you know that cows can walk up stairs, but they can’t walk down stairs? It’s the way their knees are designed. So cool! Also, cows are like people. They like being together, and sometimes they like the other cows in their herd and sometimes they don’t! Ducks in a row

Something a little different this week. I was wondering what ducks would wear if they could get dressed up. What do you think? Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!

Buffalo

I learned a lot about buffalo!  It turns out what we call buffalo in America are actually Bison.  Buffalo are in Africa and Asia.  And their horns look like question marks! Click on the image below, or click here, to open the coloring page, then download, print, and start coloring!
