Sunflowers

Aren’t sunflowers so happy – it’s like they should have a big smile in the middle of the flower! So many fun things to know about sunflowers – they give us and the birds yummy seeds to eat and also oil to use. And after you take the seeds out you can use the head of the sunflower as a scrubby brush! They grow straight and tall – the tallest sunflower was the size of a 3 story house! – and while they are growing, the flower turns during the day so it is always looking at the sun. This is called heliotropism. Once it gets big and heavy with the seeds it stays in one place looking toward the east so it can see the sun rising in the morning! One more interesting thing – each of the seeds is actually a tiny flower inside the big flower!
