Raking leaves

Such a beautiful and fun time of year! All of the beautiful colors and the crunch sounds when you walk through the leaves. And, of course, jumping in leaf piles! Did you know that the color that we see in the fall is actually the true color of the leaf? The summer sun mixes with something called chlorophyll in the leaves that makes the leaf green – but when the sun isn’t as strong and we move towards Fall, the […]

Apple picking

One of the fun things to do where we live in the Fall is to go apple picking – and apple tasting! There are so many different kinds of apples in the world that if you tasted a different kind every day it would take you 20 years to taste them all! Acorns harvest!

It’s that time of year with the squirrels running around gathering up acorns for the winter. Squirrels, woodpeckers, and deer eat acorns – and people can too! But not straight off the oak tree…unless you want a tummy ache. People have to either cook the acorns or soak them in water for a long time to make them safe to eat. Black bears!

The other day while I was walking in the woods, I ended up talking to a little boy who excitedly told me he had seen a bear on his walk and I excitedly told him I had seen one too and we were both so excited that we had someone to tell who believed us that we walked away happily. Since there are only 50 black bears in the entire state of Ohio, I think we both probably were dreaming […]

Pine Cones

Seeds for growing new trees grow in the pine cone. They start off soft and green and sticky and then grow into hard brown cones to protect the seeds. After a few years, they open up and the wind blows the seeds out! Pine cones come in all different sizes – from as small as your little finger to as long as your arm and from weighing almost nothing to weighing 10 pounds! The ones Sophie and Sadie found look […]

Hiking through the pine trees

Looks like Sophie and Sadie found a beautiful place to go hiking. Pine trees are so tall and strong – and have a lovely smell. Instead of big leaves that fall off in the winter, the leaves of pine trees are shaped like needles and they stay on all year. The shape is perfect for wintertime, since the snow slides right off! Lemonade Stand

I know that it’s summer when I see lemonade stands popping up! I don’t know about where you live, but where we live it’s really hot and lemonade is the perfect drink to cool down. There is evidence that people were drinking lemonade in Egypt a long time ago (1500 years ago!) – which I can understand…it’s really hot there! I’m wondering if Sadie is going to drink all of the lemonade! Click on the image below, or click here, to open […]

Starry Night with Cactus

I don’t know about you – but I think Sophie and I have the same idea….that sure does look like Sadie in the Starry Night! Just like Van Gogh’s famous painting called Starry Night – this one has parts that are a little different that they actually look in real life. That’s why Van Gogh belonged to the art school called post-impressionism. Can you see the moon and the stars and maybe even the wind?! Click on the image below, […]

Museum – sculpture, Oval with Points

I’m not sure how Sophie and Sadie got to the sculpture without walking on the grass – I also don’t know how they managed to climb it! Oval with Points, which this sculpture looks like, was done by the artist Henry Moore. It’s pretty big as you can see – and made of bronze. He wanted his art to be outside for people to enjoy (although probably not climb on!) instead of in museums. Can you see where the points […]

Hockey

Did you know that before ice hockey pucks were invented, frozen cow poop was used as a puck!  Wow, the things we learn.  There are lots of different ways to play hockey – on ice, on roller skates, on the street, under water, with a ball, with a puck… Sophie and Max are playing street hockey – looks like fun!
